Vitter calling out Army Corps on Terrebonne flooding

Vitter is pointing at the Army Corps of Engineers as responsibilty for flooding in Terrebonne parish:

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to explain why it hasn’t started work to upgrade non-federal levees in Terrebonne Parish while spending money on what he believes is an unnecessary study by Southern University.

Seems that talks with Vitter have made some waves, and the Corps has (at least for now) accepted some responsibility and vowed to speed up the process:

“I’ve … gotten a commitment to change the pace dramatically and to try to get this built by next hurricane season,” Vitter told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said the corps also has committed itself to studying Vitter’s proposal to let state and local officials take the lead and help further speed up work on fortifying levees overtopped by Ike.
